Introduction

Northern Hull Community Development Ltd, known as Unity in Community, was formed in 1997 as a Community Development Trust for the HU6 area of North Hull (the Orchard Park and Greenwood, University, and Beverley wards). This is the area north of Cottingham Road, north and west as far as the city boundary and east to the River Hull.

Vision

Unity in Community’s aspiration is to be at the forefront of enabling the community to take the lead in the social, environmental, economic, cultural and spiritual regeneration of HU6 in a holistic, effective and meaningful way.

Unity in Community will be an integral part of the HU6 community through being owned by the community as their Community Development Trust.

The wider stakeholders will respect it as an independent and responsive organisation that delivers, and works in true partnership to meet joint aims.

Aims and Objectives

For the long term Unity in Community has identified 3 key strands for its work within the HU6 area:

These three strands are reflected in Unity in Community’s aims:

  1. To support the growth of capacity in the area, this will involve local residents and interested parties in the running of organisations and projects in the HU6 area.
  2. To develop long term assets in the area, for the use of members of the Community, for the delivery of projects and for the generation of income to support the activity of the community and Unity in Community and so reduce the dependency on short-term grant income.
  3. To develop projects that will increase the opportunities for HU6 residents through the development of employment based initiatives and through the delivery of training (both certificated and non-certificated).

It is crucial that Unity in Community continues to be Resident led. There is a commitment to ensure that the people of Northern Hull have a strong voice through membership and by election to the Board.

The way that Unity in Community operate is monitored by the Unity in Community Board who receive monthly management reports from Unity in Community staff.

Finally, the considerable advances made by Unity in Community could not have been achieved without the dedication of the staff and volunteers, all have contributed valuable ideas and have given tremendous support.
